Trinity Volleyball

Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill suffered a pair of setbacks in the Warrior Fall Showcase, but games against two tough Class 3A opponents provided plenty of opportunities for growth for the Lions as they now look toward the heart of their regular-season slate.

Arendell Parrott dealt the first, 3-0 loss Friday by scores of 25-14, 25-8, 25-15. The Lions avoided a second sweep on the weekend, claiming a second-set victory Saturday versus host Fayetteville Christian, 25-22, but ultimately dropped the match 3-1 with 25-14, 25-18, 25-13 defeats in the first, third, and fourth sets, respectively.

The second set against the Warriors was the highlight of the Lions’ time in Fayetteville. In that one, passing out of serve receive and defending against the Warriors’ attacks were the positives.

And gaining confidence, particularly in the back row, as a result ultimately sets up Trinity for an upward trajectory.

“I think that’s something that we came into the tournament [with]. We didn’t know the teams that we were gonna play, and then when [plays] came at us, we changed our perspective so that instead of being scared of the ball, we wanted the ball to come to us [so we could] win the point,” said Teddie Dailey, a freshman who recorded four kills and three aces Saturday.

An improved team-wide mindset also is something to build on, according to junior Caroline Chandler, who tallied 11 total kills and five total aces between both matches.

“We were able to not give up when we were down, which I’m very, very proud of,” she said. “We were making some hitting errors, but we were still swinging. I think that’s very important, to not give up the intensity and the effort even when the score is maybe not reflecting our best work.”

The Lions also put up a valiant fight against Parrott in the third set Friday. Chandler was a catalyst early to keep Trinity within striking distance, recording a handful of kills or aces. But several Lions errors and tough serving by the Patriots ultimately led to a 9-2 run that sealed the victory for Parrott.

Erin Sneed tallied nine kills, two digs and one ace on the weekend for the Lions, while Abigail Newman did her job as libero with 12 digs.
